Bird Outside My Window

Bird outside my window,

Singing loudly before the sun has risen,

What are you trying to tell me?

Or is it me you’re talking to?

Are there others you have in mind?

I’m trying to find direction on this early spring day,

Your chirping reminds me the day has begun,

And that I need to get up and at it.

So thank you bird outside my window,

For your singing begins the day,

I can’t think of a more pleasant beginning,

Maybe all days should start this way.

24 Hours a Day

Meditation for the Day

I must live in the world and yet live apart with God. I can go forth from my secret times of communion with God to the work of the world. To get the spiritual strength I need, my inner life must be lived apart from the world. I must wear the world as a loose garment. Nothing in the world should seriously upset me, as long as my inner life is lived with God. All successful living arises from this inner life.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may live my inner life with God. I pray that nothing shall invade or destroy that secret place of peace.

Language of Letting Go

Getting Needs Met

Picture yourself walking through a meadow. There is a path opening before you. As you walk, you feel hungry. Look to your left. There’s a fruit tree in full ripe. Pick what you need.

Steps later, you notice you’re thirsty. On your right, there’s a fresh water spring.

When you are tired, a resting place emerges. When you are lonely, a friend appears to walk with you. When you get lost, a teacher with a map appears.

Before long, you notice the flow: need and supply, desire and fulfillment. Maybe, you wonder, someone gave me the need because someone planned to fulfill it. Maybe I had to feel the need, so I would notice and accept the gift. Maybe closing my eyes to the desire closes my arms to its fulfillment.

Demand and supply, desire and fulfillment — a continuous cycle, unless we break it. All the necessary supplies have already been planned and provided for this journey.

Today, everything I need shall be supplied to me.

MLB Opening Day

Today marks the opening of the 2019 Major League Baseball season. I happened to turn on the television and noticed the game being played in a major league park, not in Florida or Arizona, sites for spring training games. I figured perhaps they were playing a game or two in the home park before the start of the regular season. But after finishing my first mowing job of the season, I came back in and noted yet another game on the tube. A quick check of the internet showed that indeed, today is the first day of major league baseball for the season.

Used to be, once upon a time, I would follow baseball very closely. I would have known today was the opening day of the season and could have told you who was playing whom. But like so many other things in life, it’s not as important these days. With players switching from team to team and salaries in the hundreds of millions, it just doesn’t have the appeal it used to.

But just for today, I’ll go back in time and watch what I can of the game on right now, the Braves and the Phillies. It does bring back a lot of memories of days gone by and that’s not such a bad thing.
