It was in December of 2024 that I received my set of dentures. I had no idea of what the journey would be like and there have been several twists and turns along the path. But overall, I’m pleased with the results.
On December 10th of 2024, I had my remaining teeth removed and dentures put into place. I was fortunate to have my daughter take care of me post-surgery and several days after. That whole process was a lot less traumatic than I might have assumed it would be. I didn’t have one post-surgery visit with the doctor, but all with this process went well.
It did take a long while to get used to eating with dentures. I was along the lines of thinking there would be foods I’d no longer be able to eat, but for the most part, that hasn’t been the case. I will have to admit I haven’t bitten into an apple or corn on the cob, but then again there are other ways to eat those foods.
I have had two soft realigns in the year’s time. They put a material that fits in between your dentures and gums that affords a better fit. I still use denture adhesive to help with all that as well. I have as of yet to have them completely fall out while eating…this was always a fear of mine. This spring I will have a hard realign for both uppers and lowers that will be more permanent.
The only real setback with the whole process has been a loss of much of my sense of taste. The upper set of dentures covers most of the roof of my mouth and little did I realize that I had taste buds up there as well. With a lot of foods, there’s been a great decline in ability to taste. The one exception I have found is with sweet, sugary foods. They still have much the same taste and I have to be careful not to over-indulge.
I think I’ve adjusted well to the whole process. I wish implants were more affordable, but for now, I’ve been well-pleased with the whole process!
