I recently was contacted by our city’s minor league baseball team, the Hickory Crawdads. It would seem that a good friend had given them my name as a possible back-up PA announcer for games. They wanted to know if I would be interested in filling in for the regular announcer on selected games.
As I usually do, I told them I would think about it and get back to them about whether or not I would be interested. After thinking about it over the weekend, I decided to accept their offer.
I will shadow the regular PA announcer this upcoming Thursday and then do my first games on Saturday evening….turns out it’s a double header that night. I did have to secure a copy of my social security card from the school system to get the paperwork filled out properly and that took a bit of doing.
The person I spoke with didn’t realize this would be my second stint as the Crawdad’s PA announcer. When the team first moved to Hickory I had tried out for the job and although I didn’t get the position, I did get hired as a back-up. I also would help with scoreboard operations and keeping score.
So yet another part-time job has come my way….I’m excited about working as a PA announcer again, a job that I was introduced to forty-one years ago when I worked for the local recreation department as a scorekeeper/announcer…..Round and round the circle of life goes.
