(‘Brother Square-Toes’—Rewards and Fairies)

If you can keep your head when all about you

    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

    But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;

    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

    And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

    And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

    To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

    If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

From 24 Hours a Day…

Meditation for the Day

God’s spirit is all around you all day long. You have no thoughts, no plans, no impulses, no emotions that He does not know about. You can hide nothing from Him. Do not make your conduct conform only to that of the world and do not depend on the approval or disapproval of others. God sees in secret, but He rewards openly. If you are in harmony with the Divine Spirit, doing your best to live the way you believe God wants you to live, you will be at peace.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may always feel God’s presence. I pray that I may realize this Presence

Back to Work…

I’ve had a break from my interim teaching job for the past five days, but today it’s back to work. We had teacher workdays last Thursday and Friday. As a part-time employee,, I’m not allowed to work those days. Then, of course, there was the weekend. I took yesterday off since I’m at a limit on how many days I can work per calendar month. But today, it’s back to the salt mine.

It reminds me of a time growing up when the snow had caused school to be cancelled for several days. I had spent a portion of that time with my grandparents. I remember listening to the radio one afternoon, waiting to see if there would be school the next day. I recall when the edict was declared that we would indeed be going back to school. I remember a deep sadness and think there’s even a chance I may have cried a bit. There was something about the snow and staying with my grandparents that really appealed to me.

As I lay sleepless in bed last night, I realized that today is much the same type of day for me. My grandparents are no longer with us, and I live on my own, but there’s something really nice about having a break from school.

I can already predict a nice nap when I return home at the end of the school day.

What was the best compliment you’ve received?

I would have to say when former students I’ve had during my teaching career say they have fond memories of the classes they’ve had me for in the past. It’s usually not the actual subject matter I taught them, but instead the enjoyment they experienced while in my class. I try to treat people the way I want to be treated and I’ve tried to use that mantra through the years.
